Navajo sand painting integrates art and life and it also has spiritual value.

In Navajo culture, the shaman, or hataali is one of the persons responsible for spiritual healing. For the hataali, art is not just an object; it also has spiritual value and can bring healing to a person or a people.

Conversely, some spiritual events are beautiful, carry tremendous significance and are thought of as art. Sometimes acts of spiritual significance are separated from their original source, and used only in the context of their beauty. Does that mean that they lose their spiritual power? In some schools of thought, it is believed that they don’t, and that we have to be careful of how we use beautiful objects or acts that have spiritual significance.

A Sioux Medicine Man Offers a Ritual ...

Buy From Art.com

The process of Navajo sand painting as well as the object produced through Navajo sand painting have equal value. They are both beautiful and carry tremendous spiritual significance. The creation of the art is regarded as a sacred work.

The hataali creates the sand painting. During the process of creating the sand painting, the hataali invokes spiritual power, in order to bless or heal a person who is ill.

After the hataali, who is appointed as a Navajo religious singer, chants a Navajo legend, he then makes the sand painting by sifting colored sand through his fingers and onto the floor. The painting acts as an altar and the person who is ill sits in the center of it when it is completed.

The hataali transfers the illness from the sick person to the painting. After the process is complete, the painting is swept up into a blanket, and disposed of where it can do no harm to anyone with the sickness it has taken on.

Rap Superstar Nicki Minaj to Perform in Jamaica at Reggae Sumfest

Hip hop superstar recording artiste Nicki Minaj is scheduled to perform at Reggae Sumfest 2011. Although she has been performing for quite a while, her big break came when she was discovered by Lil Wayne, founder of the American rap label Young Money Entertainment. Young Money Entertainment is a brand name of Cash Money Records.

Nicki Minaj is currently signed to Young Money Entertainment and has been with the record label since 2009. She is regarded as the “first lady” of Young Money Entertainment. In February, Young Money Entertainment hosted a pre-Grammy soiree at The Lot, in West Hollywood. She was one of the rappers honored at the event and received a platinum check for her album, Pink Friday.

Even though she is a young rapper and relatively new on the scene, Nicki Minaj has already experienced tremendous success in the music industry. She has done collaborations with a number of artistes from different genres, including rap and reggae. She was the first artiste to have 7 songs on Billboards Hot 100 chart simultaneously.

The remix of the song, Hold Yuh, which she recorded with reggae artiste Gyption, has done extremely well in a number of countries. Her debut studio album Pink Friday has a lot of great songs that her fans will be looking forward to seeing her perform on stage at Reggae Sumfest in Jamaica.

She will have a lot to offer patrons at Reggae Sumfest on International Night 2, on July 23.
Known as the Greatest Reggae Show on Earth, Reggae Sumfest has always had a wide cross section of recording artistes billed to perform. The music festival has always drawn people from across the world. The reggae beat and the spirit of the people create a musical event that is truly memorable.

This year, Reggae Sumfest will take place from July 17-July 23. Each night, the show will start in the evening and end in the early morning. The cost to attend each night of the music festival is U.S. $15 .Many patrons choose to buy a pass for all six nights.
Nicki Minaj at Reggae Sumfest-it’s a show that shouldn’t be missed.

Jamaican Writers: Colin Channer

Colin Channer has made a noteworthy impact on modern Jamaican writing. This is because the Sundance Film Festival is seen as one of the most important film festivals that are held every year. Although other film festivals, such as the Venice Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival, have a number of attendees, Sundance is seen as the premier festival for filmmaking.

Sundance takes place every year in Utah, in the United States. The festival was started by actor Robert Redford over 30 years ago.

Sundance Film Festival dates for 2012 are January 22, 2012 to January 25, 2012. Movies 2011 will be considered in December for Sundance 2012.

The Sundance Film Festival dates will mark a significant point in the careers of most people who are involved in filmmaking. Filmmakers usually feel a sense of approval when their film makes it into the Sundance film Festival, because only the best of all quality productions for the season are shown there.

Japanese Bamboo Baskets

Japanese bamboo baskets are used in Japanese ikebana designs. The potter’s wheel lessens the work that has to be done to move and turn the clay.

Pottery Wheel

Buy From Art.com

The first bowls with stems were made after the wheel was invented.

The first pottery wheels were mechanical. They are also known as kick wheels.

The first pottery wheel powered solely by electricity was made in the 20th century, about 1920.
The American Art Clay Company (AMACO) made the first electric kiln for school and studio use.
The first adaptable wheel for physically challenged persons was designed by AMACO-Brent in 1982.
This revolutionized the ceramics industry.

Potters today usually have a preference for a particular type of wheel.
Some potters prefer the electrical wheel and give reasons such as its portability-they are lighter and can be easily moved from place to place. They are also less expensive than kick wheels.

Others would never part with their mechanical wheel because they prefer to be able to control the speed more easily. Kick wheels also have a longer lifespan, on average, than electrical wheels.

Brent, Skutt-Thomas Stuart, Pacifica and Creative Industries are among the brands which have built a reputation for producing sturdy, reliable potter’s wheels.
You may also like these articles by this author:
Autumn Leaves and Their Colors
Upcoming Film Festivals 2011
Movies 2011-Upcoming Movies in Theaters

What is Spreadsheet Art?

The other day I was browsing and came upon an article by Anil Dash titled “Spreadsheet Art Revisited”.
http://dashes.com/anil/2008/12/spreadsheet-art-revisited.html

There is even a book on the topic. They are not used with oil paints for example, because oil is too unyielding and heavy.

Chinese and Japanese painting both have specialized techniques developed over centuries using bamboo brushes with water based media. Water based media include inks and water colours. Thus, bamboo brushes are used in Sumi-E (water colour) art because they suit the lightness of water colour extremely well.

Bamboo brushes are used in ceramics.

In ceramic work, bamboo brushes are used to apply glazes. The ceramic glazes are lighter and more fluid than oil, or say, acrylic.

Generally, bamboo brushes are good for doing fine lines and details.

The yasutomo series 5601 sumi(oriental ink) brush sold by Dick Blick has a sharp tip and firm body, which allows it to be used to execute all kinds of brush strokes easily. It also is flexible enough for good shading and colouring.

Dick Blick sells another brush, the CA5, which has a resilient, sharp point, which makes it excellent for sumi drawing as well as calligraphy.

Painting with a bamboo brush may turn out rewards in your artistic career in many unexpected ways.
Pick one up at your local store and give it a try!

You may also like these articles:

Jobs in Japan: Considering a Move to Japan?
Japanese Bunraku Puppetry: Traditional Puppetry
Upcoming Film Festivals 2011

How to express yourself in the style of the Orient by using a bamboo brush

A bamboo brush is a brush constructed with a bamboo handle and animal hair. The foundational idea of Chinese and Japanese brush painting is that less is more.
This article teaches about basic tools and techniques used in Japanese and Chinese brush painting.

An Oriental Flavour IV

Buy From Art.com

Brush strokes come in all lengths and widths and with varying levels of curvature.
When exploring brush technique in this fashion, to stay as true to form as possible, it is better that you work with water based media such as watercolours or inks.
1. Lines with tapered ends. When completing a stroke, lift the hairs of the brush off the paper/surface slowly.
2. Remember that a brush can be held against a surface horizontally, it has a tip, it can be moved quickly as well as slowly. Practice all these movements until your hand becomes used to each of them.
3. Quite often a small gap is left between brush strokes. Think of the effect that has on the general appearance of the subject of the painting.
4. When making a vertical stroke, begin at the top and end the stroke towards the bottom of the paper/surface.
5. When making a horizontal stroke, sweep your hand from the left, to the right of the paper/surface.
6. To make the short fat strokes known as dot strokes, apply a dot moving right and pause.

7. To do ‘flying white’, move the brush quickly, while applying pressure. This will cause the hairs of the brush to separate, leaving white spaces in the ink, and giving an impression of strength and speed.

8. Practice makes perfect!

You may also like these articles:
Seven Interesting Facts About Osaka, Japan
Agro Tourism-Stroll Down a Banana Walk in the Caribbean
Japanese Art

Where to study Art-Choosing an Art College

I f you have been interested in being an artist for a while, whether it’s a lifelong dream or something that struck your fancy only recently, a natural step is to learn more about your area of interest through study.

A lot of options are available nowadays. has a wide variety of uses and it is manufactured with different degrees of stickiness for different jobs. The degree of stickiness is called the tack level.

There are many categories of tape. Some of these are:
Low tack tape, which is used on delicate surfaces. Too much tack will damage the surface, pulling off paint and even plaster upon removal. Low tack tape usually gives clean removal for up to 24 hours.
General purpose tape. This can used on multiple surfaces. It usually gives clean removal for up to 30 hours.
Lacquer tape. This tape is highly adhesive. It is designed specifically for use with lacquer coatings. It works for rough surfaces such as stucco, concrete and wood. It can be cleanly removed for up to three days
Professional finish tape, which can used on multiple surfaces. It usually gives clean removal for up to 14 days.
Some tapes are also different because they are built specially to cover curved and uneven surfaces. If you can get that tape, it will help you cover a curve more easily. 3M’s scotch tape does this.

Manufacturers, by brand, include Duck, 3M, Scapa, Faithfull, Toolstation and Ultratape. You can also get non-branded tapes. Tapes can be bought at the hardware or over the Internet.
Read the label of the tape. The label will usually state whether the tape is for use on multiple surfaces or only on a specific type of surface. It will also state how long you can get clean removal for, with that type of tape.

Summer Home Surrounded by Fall Colors...

Buy From Art.com

For optimum results:
Select the right type of tape.
Paint away from the tape, rather than towards it.
Keep in mind that all tapes have an optimum period for removal. After that time it will not lift from the surface as easily.

Remember, in summary, for painting clean edges you want a tape that will
Be removed cleanly.
Be removed without carrying some of the surface with it.

Get to it!

You may also like these articles:

Things to do in Osaka Japan in the Summer
Japanese Samurai Culture Lives on Through the Arts
Tall Ikebana Designs and Full Moon Ikebana Containers

Tips for neat lines in home painting

Lines are used in a room for many different things. They exist between the ceiling and the wall, at corners, border electrical sockets and form some faux finishes. Horizontal lines make surfaces appear larger than they are and can be used on walls to create a seemingly bigger space.

As with everything else, the tool chosen for the job can make a difference in the end result.
Low tack masking tape (this has less glue and is less likely to tear off paint upon removal) is helpful, if applied at the edges of surfaces that you want protected from your paint job- but be careful when using it. Paint actually can leak under the edges. Using it doesn’t give the painter license to paint without paying attention to detail!

A small brush is handy tool when you want to do corners or fill in distinct areas. By small, I mean three-quarter inch to one and a half inches.
There are certain brushes that have the bristles cut at an angle. These are good to have for going around borders.
You can buy an ordinary brush and make an angled brush yourself by cutting the bristles to an angle as recommended.

A good synthetic brush will work well with the thicker paints that we usually use in the home. The bristles are stiffer, so that gives more control when handling the heavy paint.
Don’t put a lot of paint on the brush at any one time. Put just enough to make the portion of line you want with a single stroke.
When painting the edge of a wall, start in one corner. Gradually go down the edge of the wall.
For very wide lines, use a level to draw your lines, then paint.

Japanese Flower Arranging (Ikebana) a...

Buy From Art.com

Practise using the different brushes. Some leather is softer than others, depending on the animal of origin. For example, the hide of a deer will produce soft leather.

Leather embossing involves allowing the leather to stretch so that it can hold a mark and leaves a three-dimensional image, of a letter for example, on the leather.

Young Dassanech Girl Wears a Leather ...

Buy From Art.com

The type of leather that is usually used for embossing is known as “veg tan” or vegetable tanned leather. You can get the leather you want to work with from a tannery.
The yellow pages of your local phone directory should help you to find a local tannery. However, if you choose to, there are companies on the Internet that also sell various kinds of leather. Individuals will sell leather on Ebay.

The embossing wheel is one of the tools used for creating designs on leather. Tools used for creating designs on leather are usually made of metal. They may be bought on the internet-from companies that specialize in producing those tools, at craft stores, or they may be bought from companies that supply leather or leather products.

Leather should be heavily moistened when you are about to begin embossing. This will allow a stiff design to form when the leather dries. Choose a wheel that has on the pattern you desire and attach it to the wheel carriage.

While gripping the handle firmly, roll the wheel on the “wrong” side of the leather, at the point where you want the design to appear. When the leather dries, the design will be raised on the right side.

If the metal is heated, it changes the color of the leather. It also allows for a deeper impression to be created in the leather. Leather craft is an art and work produced today will be enjoyed for years to come!

You may also like these articles:

Things to do in Osaka Japan in the Summer
Japanese Samurai Culture Lives on Through the Arts
Tall Ikebana Designs and Full Moon Ikebana Containers

Making nails beautiful with artistic nail designs

Beautiful nails can be created in many ways. If you are going to paint by hand you will need such tools as a liner brush, a small one.
After you paint on the basic nail color, give it some time to dry. Then, you can begin painting.

Paint the wider spaces on your design in basic, even strokes with the liner brush. For thin curved or straight lines use a striper brush. The type of brush you use will match the thickness of the line or space you want to paint.

Nail art pens allow you to create art that looks like an air brushed design. One particular brand has a brush on one end and a drawing tip on the other end.

Your nails make a great painting surface and you carry the art everywhere.

You may also like these articles by this author:
History of Ceramics: The Pottery Wheel
Ghibli Studios: Creating Animated castles in the Sky
Loreal Models 2011
Review: The Borrower Arrietty Download

wood stain-applying to a wooden chair

How to Stain a Wooden Chair

Many of us may have an old wooden chair-perhaps in the kitchen or in our workspace-that we would like to give a new look. Any wooden article can be changed in appearance by staining it.

A stain is a mix of a solvent, pigment and a binding agent. A stain gives protection to wood and also enhances the grain of the wood. Stains are easy to use.
Stains come in many different traditional and contemporary colors. Imagine your chair with a protective covering the shade of green tea, honey dew or English oak!

The color you use will affect the look of the room your chair is placed in. If you use a dark color, it will make your room feel more clustered, whereas a lighter color will give more of an appearance of space to the room.

Empty Beach Chairs at Sunset, Denis I...

Buy From Art.com

Projects like this are best done outside, so the dust and fumes from the chemicals you will be working with don’t make you, or your family members ill.

Remove any old varnish or layer of protection on the chair’s surface. If you don’t, the new stain will not adhere properly to the surface. You can do this with sandpaper. Make sure you wipe the surfaces of the chair clean of the dust left over from sanding.

Test the color at a spot on the chair that is inconspicuous, so that if it is not exactly what you imagined, you can make corrections or adjustments.
Mix the stain well to make sure the pigment is evenly distributed throughout.
Apply the stain using a synthetic bristle brush or a soft rag. If you have gloves use them. Your hands will be protected.

You may also like these articles by this author:
History of Ceramics: The Pottery Wheel
Ghibli Studios: Creating Animated castles in the Sky
Loreal Models
